Speech at the Fleet Base East on the occasion of the unveiling of a commemorative plaque for the AE2 submarine which had participated in the Battle of Gallipoli, 22.04.2009

HONORABLE MINISTER,
AE2 COMMEMORATIVE FOUNDATION CHAIRMAN REAR ADMIRAL BRIGGS,
DISTINGUISHED FLEET BASE COMMANDER,
DISTINGUISHED GUESTS,

IT GIVES ME GREAT PLEASURE TO BE HERE TODAY ON THE OCCASION OF THE UNVEILING OF A COMMEMORATIVE PLAQUE FOR THE DEPARTURE OF THE HMAS AE2 SUBMARINE FOR THE DARDANELLES 94 YEARS AGO. ALSO I WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND WARM GREETINGS OF THE TURKISH AMBASSADOR WHO COULD NOT ATTEND TODAY’S CEREMONY.

I WOULD LIKE TO EXPRESS MY SINCERE THANKS TO THE AE2 COMMEMORATIVE FOUNDATION GIVING ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE WITH SUCH A DISTINGUISHED GROUP TODAY.

I ACKNOWLEDGE AND SHARE THE GREAT FEELINGS OF REMEMBRANCE EMANATING FROM FLEET BASE EAST. IT GIVES A DISTINCT FEELING TO ME TO STAND ON THIS DOCK WHICH WITNESSED THE DEPARTURE OF AE2 ALMOST A CENTURY AGO ON ITS WAY TO GALLIPOLI.
